GIRLS 10 YEARS: Hana Green, Molly Burns, Abby Bates and Charlotte Nicholls.

SEVENTY-SEVEN players from across Eyre Peninsula took part in the Port Lincoln Tennis Association hosted annual regional junior tournament on Sunday.

After all the junior and senior games were cancelled on Saturday due to the hot weather, the organisers were blessed with great weather for the big day.

Thanks went to the sponsors of the day – Cavalier Homes, Eagle Boys Pizza, Adventure Bay Charters, Port Lincoln Gourmet Meats, Boston Bakery, Independent Sports and Port Lincoln Trophies – and the band of volunteers who helped throughout the day to make sure courts were full and all the players had plenty of food.

Darren Polkinghorne took time out of his busy schedule to run the desk at Tennyson Terrace.

In the event of the day Tim Shugg and Abby Nield were crowned the 17 years and under singles champions while Billy Byass and Tom Charlton were unbeaten in the doubles.

In the 13 years and under singles the players were competing for a spot in the Lower West Coast Foundation Cup team, which will play in the September school holidays.

The boys team is Tom Humphries, James Ryan, Arley Byass and Henry Nelligan. The girls team is Ruby Green, Charlotte Nicholls, Sarah Cook and Mikayla Richardson.

Girls 10 years and under

With only four entries in this event the girls played a round robin, which was hotly contested with Hana Green having the most points and Molly Burns runner-up. In the doubles Charlotte Nicholls and Abby Bates were the winners with Molly Burns and Hana Green runners-up.

Boys 10 years and under

With some future talent on show spectators were give a taste of the players coming through in our region.

Joseph Harris was on fire in taking out the singles with Zachary Noble runner-up and consolation winner Ned West.

In the doubles, Joseph Harris and Ned West were too consistent with the runners-up Cooper Llewelyn and Fletcher Nield.

Girls 13 years and under

Up and coming talent Charlotte Nicholls worked hard against much older opponents to win through to the final against Ruby Green.

The spectators were entertained by the standard of this match with Ruby Green showing too much experience to take out the final 6-5.

Consolation winner was M’Hiret Otto. In the doubles Charlotte Nicholls and Meaza Otto were the winners. Runners-up were Ruby Green and Mikayla Richardson.

Boys 13 years and under

With Foundation Cup spots up for grabs all the players were keen to get into the team and played their hearts out to try and make it happen.

In the singles, number one seed Tom Humphries was unstoppable taking out the final with James Ryan runner-up. Winner of the consolation singles was James Richardson.

In the doubles James Ryan and Levi Brown staged a big comeback to win from runners-up Tom Humphries and Mac Nield.

Girls 15 years and under

It was great to see good numbers in their event with players from all over Eyre Peninsula.

Abby Nield came to the courts meaning business and won the singles title and runner-up was Bonni Wheadon. Makayla Siegert won the consolation singles.

Boys 15 years and under

On a mission was Tim Shugg from Tumby Bay who had been practicing hard in the lead up to this tournament.

Shugg showed precision tennis to be the standout performer winning the singles from Jacob Hannemann.

Singles consolation winner was Matt Marschall. Winners in the doubles were Billy Byass and Tom Charlton and runners-up were Lochie Charlton and Matt Marschall.

Girls 17 years and under

This was a round robin event with Abby Nield undefeated in this event to take out the Eagle Boys Pizza $125 prize and Adventure Bay Charters’ $195 voucher from runner-up Bonni Wheadon.

Boys 17 years and under

In the event of the day Tim Shugg adjusted to the afternoon windy conditions when he was up against Chandler Smart from Ceduna.

Some hard hitting and great serving gave Shugg the early break and he gained the confidence to go for his shots to win the Eagle Boys Pizza $125 prize and Adventure Bay Charters’ $195 voucher.

Jacob Hannemann won the consolation singles.

In the doubles Billy Byass and Tom Charlton finished their day off undefeated when they took out the event against the brother combination of Chandler and Bredon Smart who were runners-up.
