Two men have escaped serious injury after crashing a light plane into a schoolyard near Ballarat.

The three engine Cessna ploughed into the Cape Clear Primary School yard, about 38 kilometres south-west of Ballarat, about 1.30pm on Wednesday.

It is believed the men were forced to make an emergency landing, having been seen circling above the area before the crash.

The plane hit a powerline on the way down.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said paramedics were treating the men at the scene but added they did not appear seriously injured.

Mr Mullen said the accident happened away from the school buildings and no children were injured.

Cape Clear Primary principal Christian Brown said the men were very lucky.

“They hit the power line and they got out alive,” he said.

“The plane didn’t break up, so they were very, very fortunate.”

Mr Brown estimated both men were aged in their 60s and said one was from Western Australia.

“There were two pilots and they came over to the school after the crash and we gave them a bit of TLC,” he said.

More to come.
