A CALF injury that threatened to derail the Orange District Cricket Association premiership hopes of CYMS has, for now, been put on ice.
Originally rumoured to be serious enough to miss the rest of the 2012-13 season, CYMS skipper and NSW Country batsmen Trent Colley tweaked his right calf muscle in his side’s 10-wicket outright win over Kinross last weekend.
But, it’s now likely Colley will miss just this weekend’s cricket which, for CYMS, includes two matches – a Friday night clash with Cavaliers and a regular Saturday ODCA game against Centrals, both at Wade Park.
Celebrating one of Chris Novak’s five second-innings wickets, Colley leapt for joy after his spearhead rattled the stumps and, a little embarrassingly for Colley, injured his calf in the process.
“It felt like someone pegged a cricket ball at me,” Colley said.
But the tear is not as bad as first thought.
“It’s just a bit of a niggle. Hopefully it’ll just be these games I’ll miss,” he added.
Fortunately for CYMS and Colley, the injury isn’t to the same calf muscle he tore in the 2011-12 NSW Country Championship final at Towradgi.
Still, his absence, even for a week, will be a big one for the green and golds.
Should the club notch two wins, it’ll secure the club a grand final berth with Orange City and Cavaliers to square off in the preliminary final.
Colley was confident, under the guidance of Luke Clarke this weekend, CYMS would still be at their best.
“I think with a couple of good efforts this weekend we’ll be able to consolidate our spot and earn ourselves a grand final,” he said.
“It’s all in our hands.”
Deputising throughout the year with Colley on rep duty, vice-captain Dave Neil will assume the wicketkeeping duties and bat at three this weekend.
Colley thought he’d take a bit of the heat off Neil with the anointing of Clarke.
“Clarkey will skipper the side. He’s been part of the leadership group I’ve turned to a lot this season. I’m sure Neily will have a fair bit of input,” Colley said,
DOWN BUT NOT OUT: CYMS skipper Trent Colley will miss this weekend’s cricket with a calf injury.
